Is New York City A Melting Pot of Brewing STD’s?

New York City is amongst the most desirable cities in the U.S. due to its melting pot of culture and diversity. Also in the melting pot?
A high mixture of STD’s brewing within the city. The city is broken up into neighborhoods and boroughs and they are not all created equal when it comes to their STD prevalence. Before we ‘out’ the neighborhoods, the list of STD’s that were diagnosed and reported were HIV, Chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis as well as hepatitis B and C.
According to the New York Department of Health, the highest prevalence of STD’s in general is found in the Bronx.
In addition, around 70% of the neighborhoods were more likely to have multiple STD’s.
According to reports, the 10457 zip code area boasts the highest number of its residents having more than two of the following: hepatitis B and C, gonorrhea, syphilis, Chlamydia and HIV.
[alert-announce]Basically, you do not want to be hooking up in the Bronx as the area contributes to 20% of NYC’s ‘infected’ population. [/alert-announce]
For a better chance of hooking up sans STD’s, try Staten Island. It had the honor of not even making on to the list of neighborhood areas with high STD’s rates. Of course, that doesn’t mean you should not get tested.
The Department of Health also reported shocking results showing the Upper West Side, Murray Hill and Soho are among the top neighborhoods where syphilis is prevalent 10 times more in its residents than any other part of NYC.
But what about other STD’s in New York City?
Chlamydia and gonorrhea were found to be higher in areas like Brooklyn, Manhattan and the Bronx while HIV and Hepatitis C were found in areas like Crown Heights, Williamsburg and Harlem.
Within the immigrant communities of NYC, the Department of Health found Hepatitis B to be the highest ranking STD, which included parts of Queens. Both Hepatitis B and C were found 10 times more than the city’s overall population in neighborhoods like Chelsea and Morningside Heights.
Even though some neighborhoods seem to claim the highest STD rankings within the city, it’s safe to say that NYC is not a place to mess around, literally. Be safe and get tested annually. Testing can always be privately, ordering online and presenting your order to labs confidentially via number. Check out these locations (and more) around the city to get tested.
